Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM Kusum) promotes solar power in the agriculture and rural sectors — cutting diesel and grid dependence, lowering irrigation costs, and enabling rural solar generation.

Subsidy structure

Central + state support, with a beneficiary share.

PM Kusum provides Central Financial Assistance (CFA) alongside state support and a beneficiary contribution.

Some components can also be implemented with 30% central support and a 70% beneficiary share, without state subsidy — depending on the route and component.

Why North-East & East India?

Where solar pumps make the biggest difference.

East and North-East India face high irrigation costs, unreliable grid supply in many areas, and significant groundwater dependence. At the same time:

North-Eastern states qualify for higher central subsidies — up to 50% — under PM Kusum.
Many eastern states have active rural electrification and solar pump programmes.

This combination makes solar pumps and micro-grids especially impactful in our focus geography.
